Term 3 is Here: A Guide for Casual Relief Teachers

Our favourite ways to find new schools, a reminder on how to turn your bookings on (or off), and more. Here’s a rundown of the ClassCover features you need to hit the ground running in term 3.  

With July upon us and the winter solstice (thankfully) in the rear-view mirror, the time has come to prepare for term 3. Whether you took to the slopes over the break or camped out by the heater at home, we hope you are feeling relaxed and ready to head back to school. To help you get a jump start on the term, we’ve jotted down the most important things to remember for casual relief teachers, and the questions you should be asking yourself as you are dragged kicking and screaming from the holiday break.  

Is my availability up to date?  

In the current teacher shortage, it can be easy to fall into the trap of neglecting your ClassCover profile and assuming that you will have schools lining up to book you regardless. While it’s true that schools may be willing to overlook certain things now that they may not have in the past, the fact remains that schools prefer it when teachers regularly update their ability.  

How do we know this? Earlier this year we put out a survey to schools around Australia to learn more about what schools really want from their casual teachers. Among the results were some sobering findings on how likely schools are to book or engage a teacher who hasn’t updated their availability.

Of the schools that responded, 34% said they don’t book teachers without updated availability, while an extra 25% take things one step further by removing these teachers from their list. Ouch!  

With such a small percentage of schools willing to book a teacher without updated availability, you should make it a matter of urgency to jump into your profile and update your availability before the start of term 3. Here’s a reminder on how to do it

Do I have bookings turned on?  

Last term we were busily working away in the background to introduce a number of great new features, including the ability for teachers to turn bookings on and off. Maybe you’re in high demand and have been booked for an extended contract. Or maybe you’ve been enjoying the winter holidays so much that you have decided to extend your break. In situations like these, we’ve made it super easy to turn bookings off in ClassCover so schools won’t be able to book you. Here’s how it’s done:

On the other hand, if you are available and ready to work in term 3, take a minute to jump into your profile and ensure you have bookings turned on.  

How do I get booked by more schools? 

Are you at a point where you want to get booked for casual work by more schools? While it can be nice getting regular bookings at the same schools, working at a range of different schools is a great way to build relationships and help polish your skills as a teacher. If you want to get booked at more schools, the first step is being added to school lists. There are a couple of ways to do this: 

  • Search for casual job postings on ClassCover Jobs. With loads of casual job posts being posted by schools each week, the ClassCover Jobs board is a great place to look for extra work. You can filter by job title, subjects, and search by distance. Depending on the school, you can even apply in seconds by directly sharing your profile.  
  • Find new schools. From your app or the web, head to ‘Find New Schools’ where you can filter by distance and request to be added to the list of schools that catch your eye within your chosen radius.  

Remember, when contacting new schools, your profile is shared with the principal, school administrator or whoever is in charge of managing casual relief teachers. Because a great teacher profile can make the difference between getting booked and being tossed aside, you should take the time to make sure your profile and avaiability is up to date.  

Should I apply for a full-time, part-time, or contract role?  

You know what they say, a change is as good as a holiday. If you have itchy feet and are thinking about other opportunities to explore within the teaching realm, it might be time to look for something more long term. Do I have the green tick? (NSW teachers only)  

For teachers in NSW, our direct integration with the Department of Education means your profile will include a tick indicating whether you are up to date with your mandatory training and have demonstrated the qualifications required to teach.  

See a green tick on your profile? Congrats! You’re ready to go. See an orange tick? That means you may have outstanding training to complete, or the Department of Education doesn’t have a record of it.  

Remember the survey we sent to schools using ClassCover? Well, when we asked how likely a school would be to book a teacher without a green tick on their profile, 65% said they wouldn’t under any circumstances. With that in mind, we suggest making a beeline to your profile and making sure you have the green tick and are ready to be booked. And if you don’t have the green tick?
