Nikki's Tips on Relief Teaching:
Be flexible, know your way around the internet and prepare for the unexpected with a plan B. Leave a nice letter to the classroom teacher outlining your day...

A little bit about Nikki from Nikki herself…

My teaching career has been a mixed bag of areas and schools.  I began in the inner city with my most memorable school being Plunkett St in Woolloomooloo, Sydney. It was a very diverse community and a beautiful school which was repurposed from an old factory site, with a few cottages.

Over the years I have taught ESL, K-6, composites, library, been a teacher’s aide, casual relief and finished my career as a Reading Recovery teacher.

After retiring, I realised I missed the 'staff room', sharing and learning new ideas. I fully embraced technology when it was introduced into schools, and have spent many an hour in wonder at the most amazing resources on the internet and incorporating them into my teaching.

I have a head full of websites and enjoy sharing my knowledge with other teachers on my "Surviving Casual Teaching" Facebook group.

My best advice to casual teachers is to be flexible, know your way around the internet and be prepared for the unexpected.  Always have a plan B.  Leave a nice letter to the classroom teacher outlining your day, take time in the playground to get to know the children, and be good to your teacher aides and the office staff!!!

Most recently I have been working on some new resources with the Casual Relief Teacher in mind, so it’s been another way for me to share my knowledge and to do something else I love, which is publishing.

I'm blessed to live in a beautiful part of the world north of Coffs Harbour, NSW where my husband and I moved because of our mutual love of surfing.  Most recently we have embraced the world of Stand Up Paddleboarding.  Nothing beats hanging out with the dolphins and the turtles!!!

I look forward to collaborating with you on the Relief Teacher Association’s PD portal.
