How to Become a Teacher in Tasmaniaย

If you want to become a teacher in Tasmania, youโ€™ll need to apply with the Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP).ย In Tasmania, DECYP oversees the stateโ€™s public schools. Before you are able to apply for a teaching role, there are a few steps that you will need to take.ย ย

    Complete an Approved Qualificationย

All teachers at Tasmanian public schools must complete a degree that is approved by the Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board (TRB).ย In most cases, those wishing to teach study an initial teacher education (ITE) program at university. These degrees have been accredited by the state or territory of study to ensure new teachers graduating from the program have the necessary skills to be classroom ready. ITE programs include:

    • Bachelor of Education
    • Master of Teachingย

You can find a full list of recognised ITE programs from the Australian Institute of Teacher and School Leadership (AITSL).ย ย

Apply for Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (WWVP)ย ย

All teachers wishing to work at public schools in Tasmania need to receive their WWVP registration. The Tasmanian TRB advises that this process can take several weeks so itโ€™s recommended that teachers apply for their registration as soon as possible so as not to delay their teacher registration application. Learn more and apply for your WWVP registration here.ย ย

    Demonstrate English Language Proficiencyย ย

Teachers who have not graduated from a university in Australia or one of the following countries will need to demonstrate their proficiency in English before obtaining their registration to teach in Tasmania.

    • Republic of Ireland
    • Canada (where tertiary studies were completed in English)
    • United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales)
    • New Zealand
    • United States of Americaย

English proficiency must be demonstrated by taking the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with the following results:ย

    • An average band score of at least 7.5 across all four skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, and writing)
    • A score of at least 8 in speaking and listening
    • No score below 7 in any of the four skill areas.ย

    Teacher Registrationย

All teachers wishing to work in public schools in Tasmania must register with the Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania (TRB).ย Once you have satisfied all the requirements above, contact the TRB to complete your registration. Teachers wishing to transfer from other states or territories may be eligible for registration through mutual recognition.ย Learn more and register with the TRB.ย ย

    Resume for Teachers in Tasmaniaย

Here are some things to include on your resume to give yourself the best chance of landing an interview. ย

    Your contact detailsย ย ย

This may sound like a no brainer, but having the correct contact details clearly displayed on your resume can mean the difference between getting the job of your dreams or being left hanging. At a minimum, itโ€™s a good idea to include your phone number and email address. If you want to make things really easy for the person reading your application, include a link to your ClassCover Portfolio.ย ย

    Availabilityย ย ย

If you donโ€™t have full availability or are applying for a part-time position, itโ€™s a good idea to include your availability on your resume. This will make things as easy as possible for the person doing the hiring and give you the best chance of getting a callback.ย ย

    Work historyย ย ย

Make sure you include a summary of your recent and relevant work experience. No, those 6 months you spend scooping ice cream in high school probably donโ€™t need to be on your resume, but any experience that relates to the role you are applying for should be.ย ย ย  ย

Qualifications and PD coursesย ย ย

To help you stand out from other candidates, include any relevant qualifications or PD courses you have completed that would help you in the role.
